FSD v13 represents Tesla's biggest leap since the v12 neural-net rewrite. But what's actually different in the real world?

What Changed in v13

Tesla never publishes detailed release notes for FSD. But from community testing and Tesla's official communications:

Better Bad Weather Performance

v12 struggled in heavy rain, bright sunlight transitions, and fog. v13 addresses these with:

  • Improved sensor fusion (better use of all 8+ cameras simultaneously)
  • Better HDR camera utilization (available on HW4 only)
  • More conservative behavior in uncertain conditions

Smoother at Intersections

v12's biggest weakness: unprotected left turns (in the US) and complex intersections. v13 shows:

  • More confident decision-making at complex junctions
  • Fewer "phantom braking" events
  • Better pedestrian behavior prediction

Improved Highway Lane Changes

v13 makes lane changes feel more "human" — checking mirrors earlier, signaling in advance, smoother execution.

The Numbers: Disengagements per Mile

Tesla reports fleet-level statistics. The trend has been consistently improving:

| FSD Version | Approx. Miles/Disengagement | |---|---| | v11 | ~200,000 | | v12 (launch) | ~500,000 | | v12.5 | ~1.2M | | v13 | ~2.7M |

Note: These are fleet averages. Individual experience varies significantly by geography and driving style.

Does It Work in Europe?

This is where it gets complicated. FSD in Europe:

  • City Streets: Currently in limited pilot for selected EU accounts
  • Autopilot: Fully available
  • Enhanced Autopilot: Fully available

Full FSD (City Streets autonomy) requires specific regulatory approvals in each EU country. Germany, France, and the Netherlands are furthest along, but full authorization likely takes until 2026-2027.

In Europe, "FSD" currently means you get the features that are legally approved: Autopilot, Navigate on Autopilot, Auto Lane Change, Autopark. The fully autonomous city driving capabilities remain US-only for now.

Is FSD Worth the Price?

Current FSD pricing (2025):

  • One-time purchase: ~8,000 USD / ~7,500 EUR
  • Monthly subscription: ~99 USD / ~99 EUR

Worth it if:

  • You drive 1,000+ km per week
  • You live in the US where City Streets is active
  • You plan to keep the car 5+ years

Skip if:

  • You're in Europe (limited features)
  • You drive primarily on routes you know well
  • Budget is a concern
